Whakapapa Ski Area

Whakapapa Ski Area is New Zealand’s largest ski area with over 65 trails to discover, ranging from beginner and intermediate to advanced and extreme ski runs. Centrally located in the North Island of New Zealand, Whakapapa Ski Area is the best place to spend your winter snow holiday. The ski season begins in June with the opening of Happy Valley and can stretch to the end of October.

Whether you just want to play in the snow, are starting out skiing or snowboarding or you’re looking for a new challenge, Whakapapa Ski Area has the terrain and snow conditions to cater for everyone.

Happy Valley

Whakapapa Ski Area is home to Happy Valley, New Zealand's largest beginner ski and snow play area. Here you can spend the day experiencing the best that a family winter holiday has to offer with ski and snowboard lessons, sledding, throwing snowballs and building snowmen!

Intermediate and advanced ski runs

For intermediate skiers, there are snow filled basins and wide open slopes to enjoy. For advanced skiers and snowboarders there are challenging runs with steep chutes and drop-offs and there are over 20 black and double black diamond runs to satisfy the extreme skier and snowboarder. Night Skiing

This winter, you will be able to see Happy Valley and the lower mountain in a whole new light! You can ski under the stars on Friday and Saturday nights with a Whakapapa Night Skiing pass.

Knoll Ridge Cafe

Situated at 2,020m above sea level, Whakapapa Ski Area's Knoll Ridge Cafe is New Zealand’s highest cafe. Here you will find great coffee, tasty treats and incredible views overlooking the Pinnacles and out over the Central Plateau of New Zealand's North Island. You can take a scenic chairlift ride to Knoll Ridge Cafe all year round.
