Things to do in Turangi

Here are some things you can do around Turangi if the weather is not playing ball on Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand's North Island ski holiday destination.

Trout Fishing

Lake Taupo and the rivers in the Great Lake Taupo region are a trout fishing mecca. The town of Turangi is known as the 'Trout Fishing Capital of New Zealand' and is a great place to base yourself to experience the best that New Zealand trout and fly fishing has to offer.

Enter the world of the wild trout that have made Great Lake Taupo famous. You can learn about the history of fishing in the region, find out how the Taupo fishery is managed and view the extensive range of fishing memorabilia. Feed the trout, visit the aquarium and enjoy a nature walk during your visit to the Tongariro National Trout Centre.

Hot Pools

Turtle Pools is located in the centre of Turangi and offers entertainment for all ages. This fully enclosed swimming complex features four heated pools including a 25 metre leisure and training pool, a 1.8m-deep activity pool, a learner’s pool and a toddler’s pool. A range of pool toys are also available.

Soak, soothe and relax in the magical mineral waters of Tokaanu Thermal Pools. The complex includes private natural mineral pools heated to 39 degrees and fresh water chlorinated public pools heated to around 36 degrees.

Visit Turangi Bakery & Cafe

Do not pass Turangi without getting your pie fix! The Turangi Bakery & Cafe is world famous (in Turangi) for their pies. The mince and gravy pie is legendary and a gold pie award winner. 

Tongariro River Trail

The Tongariro River Trail is a scenic loop ride along both sides of the Tongariro River. Enjoy this gentle ride through native bush and the beautiful views into the clear waters of the Tongariro River. Perfect for families wanting to spend a pleasant few hours either biking or walking. The Tongariro National Trout Centre is a great place to break your journey, with lovely picnic areas and bathroom facilities on site.
